The trip began with an exciting crossing on the Likoni Ferry, a vital link between Mombasa Island and the mainland since 1937. Operated by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the ferry carried our students across the Kilindini Harbour, offering stunning views of the Indian Ocean and a firsthand look at Mombasa’s bustling maritime activity. The 500-meter journey sparked conversations about the city’s role as East Africa’s largest port and the importance of efficient transport systems. The learners were thrilled to experience this iconic service, which ferries over 300,000 pedestrians and 6,000 vehicles daily, connecting communities and fostering economic growth.
Exploring Mombasa’s Historical Treasures
The group dove into Mombasa’s rich history with visits to iconic sites like Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the charming Old Town. At Fort Jesus, the learners explored centuries-old architecture and learned about Mombasa’s role in global trade and cultural exchange. Wandering through Old Town’s narrow streets, they marveled at Swahili architecture and vibrant markets, connecting their history lessons to the city’s living heritage.
